May, 2008 Archives | Homepage Avril Lavigne: The Best Damn Thing Avril Lavigne says she's the best damn thing. "The Best Damn Thing" sounds an awful lot like Avril's hit song, "Girlfriend" - which has over 84 million YouTube views. The similarity may hurt or help the song depending on whether or not people liked "Girlfriend." The music video is even similar to part of the "Girlfriend" video. Arguably both the video and song for "Girlfriend" were far better than this one. Avril's pink look is interesting but she just doesn't seem like a cheerleader or even a punk cheerleader. Yes, it's a sad, depressing song but it is oddly catchy like many previous Counting Crows songs. The video perfectly matches the tone and words of the song. Duritz appears as an angry, bitter and self-obsessed man living in an expensive apartment. He at least is wise enough to know that no one can count on him. You can watch the video here.
